Okay, Alana, time for a check-in – is the ever-rising price of gas getting to the point where it’s stopping you from doing things? Well, I don’t think this qualifies as a silver lining, but it turns out soaring gas prices aren’t the only thing going wrong in the world right now! Eila's in the Naked Newsroom with the details. Ladies, global oil prices just reached a four-year high! On Wednesday, Brent crude futures spiked at over a hundred-and-twenty-six dollars a barrel. That's the highest they’d been since March of 2022. And the price of gas across the US keeps rising as well. The average right now is four dollars and twenty-three cents per gallon, a new high for the year. With the Iran War showing no signs of settling anytime soon, expect those prices to keep rising. Speaking of America’s war on Iran, there’s this – according to a Pentagon official, it’s cost the military roughly twenty-five BILLION dollars so far! Most of that came courtesy of munitions, but operations and maintenance are also in the mix. And this expense COULD be important, because the 1973 War Powers Resolution says a president can use military force without congressional approval for up to sixty days… and in this case, that period actually ends on Friday! And press freedom is at an all-time low! According to the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, which began at the start of the century, this is the first time more than half of the world’s countries fall in the “difficult” or “very serious” categories. AND it’s the lowest average score ever! And if you’re wondering how the United States fared, it’s now ranked SIXTY-FOURTH out of a hundred and eighty nations surveyed, a drop of SEVEN spots in just one year! For context, that puts the U.S. right between Botswana and Panama. Don't go away.
