The astronauts did something that's never been done before. Let's get to the headlines! Today was a monumental day for the Artemis II mission. The Orion craft, and its four occupants, did a flyby around the moon. That took the astronauts past the moon's far side, parts of which have never been directly seen by humans before. That also brought the crew to the furthest point in space than any human in history - over a quarter MILLION miles from Earth! Speaking of our beautiful planet, NASA has been releasing photos from the mission, and they're INCREDIBLE! They include a breathtaking new version of 1972's iconic "Blue Marble" image of Earth. Truly spectacular! In other news, Donald Trump's 2027 budget proposal is asking Congress for one-point-five TRILLION dollars in defense spending alone! That's a whopping FORTY-TWO percent increase! The boost would include a pay raise for troops, plus tens of billions of dollars for new ships, restoring munitions stocks, and building the "Golden Dome" missile defense system. Meanwhile, the budget also suggests cutting NON-defense spending by ten percent, or seventy-three billion dollars. Part of that will be by shifting some federal responsibilities to state and local governments. Trump's planned budget ALSO wants a hundred and fifty-two million dollars to reopen the notorious Alcatraz prison! Alcatraz closed oversixty years ago, due to its high operating costs and need for repairs. But Trump has indicated he wants it reopened, to house the "most ruthless and violent offenders". It would be part of a one-point-seven BILLION dollar funding boost to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which the government hopes would end the ongoing shortage of correctional officers. It IS worth noting that budget proposals are generally considered "wish lists", which Congress rarely fulfills. So, we'll have to see what ACTUALLY gets funded - and defunded!
